WORSHIP & COMMUNION

Food is essential to our physical well-being. Connection with each other is also essential to our well-being.  Jesus tied the two together and turned it into reality.

We will see, hear, and touch the symbol of breaking bread together this Sunday. It is a recurring theme in the Jesus story, and in the story of his church. Jesus, our God made flesh, was always feeding people…sharing himself.

Worship is held in the Chapel - enter off 19th Ave. at Cambie St. | Coffee follows at 11:00.

EASTER II

Let us not mock God with metaphor,
analogy, sidestepping, transcendence,
making of the event a parable, a sign painted in the faded
credulity of earlier ages:
let us walk through the door.

- John Updike, from Seven Stanzas at Easter

We return this week to John’s telling of the Easter story from chapter 20.

And we will gather at the Lord’s Table.

PALM SUNDAY

COME THOU LONG EXPECTED JESUS
born to set your people free;
from our fears and sins release us;
let us find our rest in Thee.

These lines speak of a very different kind of freedom than the first century Jews (or I) previously thought I wanted. And because God is God, the freedom is and will continue to be much better!

Who are you expecting? Does the conflict between our expectations and reality continue to this very day?

This Sunday is Palm Sunday. I wonder who we are expecting?

5TH SUNDAY IN LENT

In St. Paul’s letter to the church in Colossae, he asked them to face openly the joy and pain of living in community.

He suggested they face it dressed in the wardrobe that God has picked out for all of us as Christians: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline, forgiveness, love, and gratitude.

He suggested that living in community was like a dance.  We listen to the music and we keep in step with the people around us.  We don’t go off doing our own thing.  The peace of Christ will allow us to do this, if we let it.

May it be so.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”  - Matthew 11:28

2ND SUNDAY IN LENT AND COMMUNION

Feasting for Lent??

Lent is traditionally a 40-day season of giving up or fasting from something that matters to us in preparation for Holy Week and Easter.

In this week’s Scripture, we see two examples of the number 40:  the children of Abraham wandered for 40 years in the wilderness, and Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness after his baptism.

In all these cases, no one starved. No. One. Starved.

This week, we gather at the Lord’s Table, a “feast for saints and sinners.”

And as we are reminded of what matters most, we have the opportunity to once again

Take what God offers

Live by God’s word

Love one another

And be fed mysterious manna from God’s hand

After Worship we will be enjoying a Pot Luck Lunch. We hope you can join us!

CUARESMA/LENT

Daniela Amestegui | 2021

Andean culture cherishes life in balance.

[Andean culture—Andes mountains in South America]

Nature, humans, gods, and all beings ought to live in harmony.

Whatever breaks that harmony is what is considered “evil.”

Through these lenses, Lent is a time to reflect upon what is breaking

the harmony in your life, where is that rupture coming from

and how can you restore your relationship with the earth,

with the people close to you and ultimately with God.

This time of reflection becomes a sacred space for prayer and

connection.

What a challenge to worship authentically this week as we hold in creative tension the celebration of the Chinese New Year and the Tumbler Ridge tragedy.

We will sing and reflect and pray on the centrality of what it means to Trust God at the beginning of a New Year, when we have no idea what might happen to us in the next twelve months.

Do you know how much God loves and attends to you?

God loves each of us so much that he responds to each of us when we seek him. (see Hebrews 11:6)

It is against this backdrop of love and attention that we go on to read Chapter 12. Just as we may not understand how much God loves us, we may mistake God’s training as trouble or even punishment.

We'll be delving into Hebrews 11 & 12 on Sunday. I hope you can join us!

How would Jesus use social media?

We can speculate a lot about how Jesus would use social media if he moved into our neighborhood in 2026. The only thing I know for sure is that however he used it, he would use it with love and grace.  Love one another, he said.  In this world so full of anger, pain, and loss, sometimes the most important thing is simply to be kind.

Join us on Sunday to worship and gather at the Lord’s table of grace.

This is my Son, chosen and marked by my love, delight of my life. - Matthew 3

The good news - Jesus enters into our broken world, takes our brokenness, and invites us to receive his power, love, and the gift of the Holy Spirit…through OUR baptism, perhaps.  Thus begins our journey of transformation and healing.

We hope you can join us on Sunday to celebrate Jesus’ baptism and holy communion.

WORSHIP - FOURTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS

Lights dim.

Rooms are stilled.

Joy has faded. Some grief has shown its tallowed face.

This is Christmas still.

God didn't come intermittently.

God came to reside.

Not only a holy night,

but also the dreary morning following,

the aching afternoon,

the dragging days seeping through our existence.

Today may feel anticlimactic.

You aren’t missing the festivals.

Incarnation doesn't lurk in shadows.

He comes to stay.
